Sally's
Tips
Put
a little pansy into your life.
Pansies will last all spring, giving you great color for little cash
or effort. Spring is a good time to top-dress with mulch, compost or
bark. Use bark to keep down weeds and either compost or bark will help
you to conserve water through the summer.
Now
is the time to plant seeds! We have vegetables,
annuals, and perennial seeds as well as mixed seed packets for special
situations like attracting butterflies.
If
you
want to get a head start on the growing season, herbs and vegetables
are now available in 2" and 4" sizes.
Sally's
Summer Garden Advice
Any
week without rain, make sure you water your plants! Water in the morning
for best results. Fertilize just after watering or with lots of water.
Over fertilizing happens most often (and with the worst results) when
plants are dry. Fill bare spots in with summer color. Verbena, geraniums,
lobelia and bacopa are good choices for sunny summer color. Fuschia
will attract hummingbirds and the hardy fuschias will come back year
after year and be little effort for a large flowering reward. For dry
sunny areas, try rock roses or California lilac bushes. These shrubs
are drought tolerant sun-lovers.
